  3. Purpose of MIDI Genie 0.99f
  4. ---------------------------
  5. MIDI Genie 0.99f is a Windows 95 program for playing MIDI files, Wave audio
  6. files and Video for Windows files sequentially like albums.
  7. (Can anyone out there test it on Windows NT and tell me the result?)

  9. Features of MIDI Genie
  10. ----------------------
  11. * CD player like control playing buttons: play, pause, stop, next, previous,
  12.   forward, reverse.
  13. * Sequential playing of multiple MIDI, Wav and AVI files. 
  14. * Click buttons or drag-and-drop to add or insert files from file box to the
  15.   play list.
  16. * Rearrange and sort the order of files in the play list with either mouse
  17.   click or drag-and-drop.
  18. * Remove, delete or rename files in play list with mouse click or key press. 
  19. * Save the path and name of files in the play list to Media Play List File
  20.   (.mpl) and retrieve this thereafter to play files in the same order. 
  21. * Four playing modes: Auto, Repeat, Loop and Random, can be toggled in drop
  22.   down menu or directly on label.
  23. * 2 time counter display modes: Elapsed time and remaining time.
  24. * Flexible display: showing components fully or partly, can stay-on-top of the
  25.   screen.
  26. * Save options to store your prefer playing modes and display. Your favorite
  27.   list could be auto loaded, then play from the last file you played once
  28.   you start MIDI Genie.

  30. Improvements of v.0.99f since v.0.99c

  32. * Enabled 'Play Control' under 'Options' to adjust skipping time when forward
  33.   and reverse, and waiting time between file playing.
  34. * Register file type '.mpl' as 'MIDI Genie Play List File', from now on you
  35.   can lauch a play list by double click a MPL file icon.
  36. * Enabled 'File Types Registration', you can lauch AVI, wav and mid file with
  37.   MG by double click an icon, if you have registerd these file types with MG.
  38. * Play list auto-scroll when dragging to the item at top or bottom of the box.
  39.   (Just like Bookmark Edit Window of your WEB browser)
  40. * Highlight the insert point when dragging over the play list.
  41. * Warning message box to remind user the overwriting of existing play list file
  42.   and saving of incorrect file extension for media play list file.
  43. * Better looking 3D style drive, directory and file boxes.                                         Fixed bugs in Rename and Kill this file commands. 
  44. * Fixed bugs in 'Kill this file!', 'Rename' commands and many others.
  45. * A setup program functions as both installer and uninstaller. Now I know why
  46.   Installshield can become so prosper - it's not as easy as you thought.

  51. A Pentium equivalent or better CPU
  52. A soundcard (Wave table is much better than FM)
  53. Installed MIDI driver (shoud have shipped with every soundcard)

  56. Installation
  57. ------------
  58. Unzip 'MIDIG99e.zip', then run 'setup.exe'. After installation, don't delete
  59. the zip file that soon, at least keep 'setup.exe' so you may remove MIDI Genie
  60. from you system if you wish. 
  61. User of MIDI Genie 0.99e can also use 'setup.exe' to delete the registry key
  62. written by v.0.99e.
  63. User of MIDI Genie before version 0.99c can uninstall these version of MG from
  64. Control Panel - Add/Remove Program.

  68. This version of MG also installed a MIDI file 'Waiter and Reaper' in the
  69. target directory. Well, it's an amateur work created by me. If it does not
  70. sound too good to you, don't complain, I already comprehended that!

  74. This version of MIDI Genie is free for you to trial. This means you may use it
  75. with no charge, not even one cent!

  77.  Beware: This program is not, and will never be a Public Domain. The author
  78.  plans to release a version 1.0 shareware with full bug fix and more features.

  80. However, if you feel happy in using this program, you're welcome to help the
  81. author in any following ways:

  83. Distribute it to your friends, FTP sites, WEB sites, BBS, the more the better.
  84. Submit a bug report via E-mail or post.
  85. Submit a link to good Web page associated with MIDI, Soundcards, etc.
  86. Suggest improvements and new features.
  87. Teach me a few tricks in programming. (DOS, Windows, C++ Builder, Visual Basic...)
  88. Correct my spelling and grammatical mistakes.
  89. Help me to get a job. (It's really sad to be unemployed!)

  110. Sorry, no help file is available at the moment. Here are some tips:
  111.  
  112. * You may keep the mouse pointer over the same position for a while, then
  113.   you'll see some hint text.
  114.  
  115. * You may click right mouse button on the file box, list box or control
  116.   buttons, you'll find three different popup menus.
  117.  
  118. * You may double click at the label of play modes besides the counter to toggle
  119.   they on or off.
  120.  
  121. * Double click the middle : between Minute and Second switch counter display 
  122.   between Elapsed time and Remaining time.
  123.  
  124. * Try to drag file from file box to play list box. You can drag multiple files
  125.   if you shift-click or ctrl-click somes files before you drag.
  126.  
  127. * Try to drag file in the play list box to change their orders. 
  128.  
  129. * You can trigger rename command by alt-click the file you want to rename.
  130.  
  131. * You can remove items in the play list box very quickly by pressing 'delete'
  132.   button on the keyboard.  If you feel confused about this with the 'Kill the
  133.   file!' function, don't worry, whenver it's really deleting a file forever,
  134.   there will always be a warning message for the protection of your files.

  136. * About play modes: Repeat always override Random and Loop, Random always override
  137.   Loop. Auto is compatible with them in any case.

  139. Bugs
  140. ----
  141. If you save your options when the window is stay-on-top. Then next time you 
  142. activate MIDI Genie but do not click on MIDI Genie window instead switch to
  143. another application immediately, stay-on-top function is not going to work.
  144. You may change the dislay a bit, then stay-on-top is going to work again.

  146. Other bugs? I hate them, but they like me. So please submit bug report to me.

  159. I've tested this program for many times on my Cyrix 686-166 with 32 MB RAM and
  160. MAUI Soundcard. It never caused any problem to my software and hardware. It
  161. shoud be preety safe because the Media Play List file (.mpl) including only
  162. normal file and path name in plain text. But I still have to insist here:
  163. I will not be responsible for any damages caused by this program, no matter to
  164. anything or any life form. You run your own risk in using this program.
